Sale Sharks have once again expressed their interest in not signing players. After last week’s announcement regarding Faf de Klerk and James O’Connor, in which Steve Diamond said he would not be interested in signing the pair, the Sharks Director of Rugby has put forward a load of players he wasn’t or would not be interested in.
In a rare opportunity, The Crooked Feed was given exclusive access to Diamond in an interview that lasted well over five minutes. The Sale head honcho was, for the most part, really quite sweary but went into detail about who was not on the AJ Bell outfit’s shopping list, as well as the debt Eddie Jones owes him.
“Faf de * Klerk and * James O’Connor would not be of * interest to us,” shouted Diamond (we’ve left out all the swearing and replaced those words with a * for ease of writing). “Just like we weren’t * interested in *George Ford or Geoff * Parling. We didn’t give a * toss about Ian Madigan either and Jason Woodward wouldn’t be * welcome round here I can tell you. I’ve got a big * list of players who Sale Sharks do not want to * sign. People like Paul Hill, Kyle * Eastmond, Lee Dickson, Josh Strauss, Richard Wigglesworth, Ben Spencer or any scrum-half from * Saracens… Wait, did I just say Josh Strauss? Don’t write that * down. Cross it out. Have you crossed it * out? Show me the * pad. Show me!”
Diamond was also clear on just how crucial a part he’d played in Eddie Jones selection for England’s summer tour.
“Look at all our players going to Argentina this summer. I told Eddie who he * needed on his tour and he listened. After all, I brought him * Denny Solomona didn’t I? I knew he’d repay me in some way. Mind you, I didn’t think it would be by dropping Tommy * Taylor and * Danny Cipriani! There’s a pint with his name on it next time he’s in the North West!”
Sale will provide four players for the South American tour, including, for the first time ever, a set of identical twins in Tom and Ben Curry. Uncapped Sam James also makes the squad, with rugby league wing sensation Denny Solomona also getting the nod.
In other transfer news, Sale have been rumoured to be interested in All Black scrum-half Alby Mathewson from Bristol. But when The Crooked Feed asked Steve Diamond, he said they were not.
